Epidarus, Mycenae and Pottery

The next episode of our Greek adventure is brought to you by Arin, Marcus and Rohan!
Arin
Today was our second day in the city of Nafplio.  We woke up bright and early and had a delightful breakfast.  Then, we hopped onto the bus and traveled to the Theatre of Epidarus. The theatre was beautiful and had picture perfect views.  The guide explained the history of theatre and that freedom was a key factor in the creation of theatre.  We also learned about the acoustics of the theatre and how sound gets increasingly louder as you head towards the center of the stage. Everyone then climbed to the top and experienced the amazing views.  After this, we headed to the (ruins of the) guest house where they would keep sick patients.  We sat and some students recited a part of a play for us to enjoy. After a great morning we headed towards the city of Mycenea.




Marcus
Today we visited old Mycenaean tombs and an old acropolis.  The tomb was for high level Mycenaeans (however, archeologists haven’t yet actually discovered any of these high level Mycenaeans). After looking at the tomb, we visited a Myceanaean museum followed by hiking to the acropolis. The acropolis is on a mountain, which made it harder for enemies to attack.  The Mycenaeans thrived throughout 15-12 century B.C.  The Mycenaeans currently shape the way the world looks upon Greece due to the art and ruins that they left behind.





Rohan
From here, we went to a pottery place to make our own pottery.  We had a lot of fun! The people at the art center showed us around and gave us a delicious Greek meal with omelettes, salad, cake and much more.  We created pots and the people at the center took time to teach us how to do this. We first separated the chunks of clay and rolled it flat. Then we drew a circle and a rectangle with a small stick. After we created the pots, we got to design it any way we wanted. After we put it in a box for it to dry and bring home.  In the center there were many interesting statues and paintings.  We did it to get a hands on experience in making pots and to learn how the artifacts that we see in the museums are made.  Overall we had a really good time!

Goodbye Crete - Hello Athens!

For today’s blog, BB gives a recap of our adventures in Crete.  Daniel shares our first full day in Athens. BB Today we continue our travels back to Athens. The Cretan experience has certainly been one of a kind. From cute shops to astounding restaurants, there is always something to do here. On the first day in Crete, we partook in a wonderful, traditional Greek dance class. The next morning, we explored a Cretan village and participated in a hands-on Greek cooking activity. That afternoon, we went into a museum detailing the Cretan and Minoan ancient civilizations, as well as the Palace of Knossos, which we visited immediately afterward. The Palace has been destroyed and renewed, filled with a marveling display of ancient engineering, and is home to what is considered to be the oldest road in all of Europe.
